Dear Editor,
I was very impressed with your article entitled "Africa and the Diaspora: A Call from Home"
If I were there in Washington, DC., my contribution would have been that anybody who discusses such an issue of returning to Africa or Nigeria without addressing SECURITY is simply wasting people's time and lives. Such a person is as guilty as all those being blamed for whatever is wrong with Africa at large and Nigeria in particular. Many Africans will love to go home as soon as safety of their lives and property are guaranteed. Otherwise, Diasporans heeding the calls by the speakers at that World Bank session would be returning to their deaths in a continent where the leaders don’t care about anyone but themselves.
The truth is often bitter but we must tell it. If progress in Africa is to be made in so many areas we are complaining about - be it to return and help, invest, run for office, work, donate money or offer services and infrastructure of any kind, SECURITY must be guaranteed, period. I know that I am speaking for many. You know well that many Diasporans have been killed and, or tortured one way or the other back home during their travel to their fatherland. If this does not take place at the airport terminal, it often happens on the road or at the Diasporans’ homes.
Think about it. SECURITY takes care of virtually every other problem that may not be visible to the naked eye. You and I who have been in this country (United States) know very well that LAW enforcement and SECURITY are among the foundations of this great nation. Any violation of either of the two is vehemently frowned upon. If we cannot borrow and implement these and other methods in the African or Nigerian systems, we might as well forget any dreams of ever seeing our continent developed. We don’t need to be called. We all know that Africa needs us.
Thanks.
